RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
