The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
