A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
