Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.
