Even though embarking on their maiden European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
