Unbeatable No More: Why The Indian Test Cricket Legacy Lies in Ruins

The Indian cricket team's shocking 0-2 series loss to the Proteas in the recently concluded red-ball series has sent shockwaves through the squad.

In the final match, South Africa handed India their heaviest defeat in terms of runs, defying expectations. It was South Africa's first series win in the subcontinent in two and a half decades and the host nation's second defeat at home in just 12 months after a decade-plus without a home loss.

The positive trajectory gained during the past six months has all but vanished and the careers of several players - along with team coach Gautam Gambhir - are now uncertain.

Early Optimism Fades Quickly

The young team's impressive performance in the UK this summer, under a different skipper, indicated a successful handover following the near-simultaneous retirements of key players R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

A facile 2-0 victory over West Indies at the commencement of the home campaign strengthened that view, before the Proteas came and inflicted a fell blow.

The home side were a bit unlucky that skipper Gill suffered an injury quickly in the first Test and was ruled out in the contest. However, that fails to account for the team of the well below standard display in each match against South Africa.

Some big reputations took a hit, and multiple individuals aspiring to extended tenures in Tests were revealed to be not up to the mark - in skill or mindset - for the Test cricket.

Concerning History

This was the second clean sweep at home endured by the Indian team in just a year. In 2024, little-fancied New Zealand had pulled off a surprising 3-0 win which essentially denied India a berth in the Test championship finale.

The fresh failure to South Africa threatens to derail India's prospects of qualifying for the showpiece of this season also.

After being third in the Test championship standings prior to the contest, India have dropped to fifth place. Even though nine additional matches are remaining, five of these are against Australia. Usually, performing in familiar conditions would be a significant benefit - including against the strong Australian side. But the debacles against New Zealand and the Proteas offer no room for such comfort.

Causes of the Fall

India's weakness in Test cricket has been significantly highlighted. Nevertheless, the reason the team have struggled so much in Test matches at home lately is continues to confuse.

From the year 2000 onwards, the Indian cricket team were seen as impregnable in red-ball cricket in home conditions. In demanding climates and on surfaces that favored spin bowling and suited their batsmen and bowlers, India dominated all comers. The odd series defeat, such as in 2012-13 against England, was viewed as an exception.

Now, India seem beatable at home.

Facing New Zealand in last year and the Proteas currently, India were hoisted by their own petard. The surfaces they developed to help their style backfired spectacularly, as opponents capitalized on them more skillfully, beating the home team's players when it counted the most.

The Core Issue

Certain analysts propose that the Indian team is failing in home conditions because local wickets have been altered from spinning tracks to fast tracks to get cricketers ready to succeed abroad.

A few mention that the Indian Premier League (IPL), in which numerous foreign cricketers take part, has removed the unfamiliarity and challenge Indian conditions would challenge them with earlier.

While there is validity in both analyses, it does not clarify the reason India's performances on home soil have experienced such a sharp fall.

Various Shortcomings

Many past stars identify a complicated issue, not limited to one or two factors.

Critics and players have pointed to various flaws after the team's humiliating loss to the South Africans: underestimating the opposition, poor preparation, flawed selections, overconfidence, frequent changes of the team lineup, and prioritising white-ball over the longer format.

This was obvious in the showings of the team.

Cricketers such as Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom high hopes were held, paid for their nonchalance, while Sudarshan, Reddy, and Jurel - who were looking to cement their position in the squad - were found wanting in skill and mindset, paying a heavy price for their lackadaisical method.

A small number - Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar - fulfilled their talent and reputation - but inadequately to win matches.

Coaching Scrutiny

The post-mortem also included not only the cricketers - the selection panel and support staff were also questioned, fuelled by disappointed supporters and vocal past stars. At the centre of the examination was mentor Gambhir.
