The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
