The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
